Luis Rafael Velazquez – also known as Cara Bella – has been a pioneering promoter and curator of NYC's music and arts scene since 2006. Born in Miami, Florida, Luis moved to Brooklyn in 2006 to attend the American Academy Of Dramatic Arts and to pursue a career in experimental theater. Since then he has curated multiple shows and arts events through Cara Bella Presents, including his long-running Brain-Cave Festival and the Art Pussy collective – of which he is also a founding member.
The numerous venues and organizations Velazquez has collaborated with include The Bell House, MOMA PS1, Baby's All Right and Art Basel, as well as a special event he curated in his mother's hometown of Puerto Rico. Influenced by the likes of artists and philosophers such as Alfred Jarry, Alejandro Jodorosky, Jean-Paul Sartre, John Cassevetes, and Salvador Dali, Velazquez uses the medium of theatre in order to promote a concept of transforming typical show gatherings into intimate, psychedelic and singular theatrical experiences.
